Vintage Magic Set | Petrie & Lewis, ca. 1930s – 40s

From the collection of Edwin A. Dawes. Petrie and Lewis (P&L) small format magic set with wooden props. 

Includes disappearing and reappearing corks, mysterious coin box, patriotic beads, Egyptian vase, the bewitched dial, and the Chinese disk and ring trick. 

Instructions in lid and small instruction book included. Box shows some signs of wear but overall in very good condition for age. Box measures approximately 10.5 x 7 x 1”. 

A rare and collectible piece of magic history.

Edwin A. Dawes (1925–2023) was a distinguished British biochemist and a leading authority on the history of magic. He made significant contributions to both scientific research and the study of magic, successfully blending his academic career with his passion for the art. Dawes earned a Ph.D. in biochemistry and became a respected professor, founding the Biochemistry Department at the University of Hull. His pioneering work in microbial energetics and biodegradable plastics was groundbreaking.

Alongside his scientific achievements, Dawes was a renowned historian of magic, authoring influential books such as The Great Illusionists and The Magic of Britain. He also served as the long-time President of the Hull Magicians’ Circle and received several prestigious honors, including the Gold Medal from The Magic Circle.

Dawes’s legacy endures through his scholarly work, and his contributions continue to inspire both the scientific and magical communities.
