The Magic of Tenyo

Tenyo’s roots trace to Japanese magician Matsutaro Yamada, who performed professionally as Tenyo Shokyokusai and began selling magic apparatus in Tokyo in 1931. His son, Akira Yamada, established the Tenyo Magic Research Institute in 1953, and in 1960 incorporated the business that would eventually become Tenyo Co., Ltd. With an emphasis on clever engineering, novel methods, and accessible design, Tenyo helped bring magic once largely intended for specialists to a much broader audience.

Beginning with its international exports in the 1960s, Tenyo introduced the numbered “T-series” of magic tricks that has since become particularly familiar to collectors. Often deceptively simple in appearance, many Tenyo effects conceal remarkably inventive mechanical principles. Discontinued models, unusual packaging variations, and early examples have developed an enthusiastic international following, making Tenyo an important and distinctive field of modern magic collecting. Japanese Ingenuity in Magic

Melting Loop. T-64, 1972

Designed by Hideo Kato, a solid cord apparently melts through itself despite being securely interlocked. An early example of Tenyo transforming a seemingly impossible penetration into a compact, self-contained effect.
Telesphere. T-127, 1986

Designed by Hiroshi Kondo, colored balls mysteriously travel between small covered pedestals. The compact apparatus turns a classic transposition plot into a distinctly Tenyo mechanical illusion.
Astro-Sphere, ca. 1972

A gleaming silver sphere mysteriously floats around a sheer silk, rising, falling, and drifting from side to side. Tenyo licensed Tony Spina’s version of the classic floating-ball effect for the Japanese professional magic market.
Coin Through Match. T-17, ca. 1966

A coin visibly passes through a wooden match placed across its path inside a small case, after which the apparatus may be examined. An early T-series penetration effect and an appealing example of Tenyo’s deceptively simple engineering
Hyper Vision. T-143, 1989

Designed by Tomoyuki Shimomura, a miniature television-like apparatus allows the performer to reveal a freely selected card. Introduced in 1989 and now discontinued.
The Midas Machine. T-109, 1981

Designed by Hiroshi Kondo, a blank piece of paper visibly transforms into real currency as it passes through a miniature printing machine. One of Tenyo’s particularly visual mechanical effects of the early 1980s.
Kings & Aces. T-13, 1968

Created by Hideo Kato and Akira Yamada, the Kings and Aces mysteriously exchange places. Dating to 1968, it represents the formative period of Tenyo’s T-series and the company’s early exploration of specially constructed card magic.
Flash Dice. T-72, 1976

Designed by Takuya Yoshizawa, two dice mysteriously exchange places between the performer’s hand and a small case. A classic example of Tenyo’s ingenious mechanical close-up magic of the 1970s.
Smart Guillotine. T-281, 2018

A solid blade visibly passes through a spectator’s finger or a rolled bill held within a transparent frame, leaving it completely unharmed. Designed by Takayuki Kumazawa as a modern interpretation of the classic finger guillotine.
Dove Pan, ca. 1980s

A Japan-market Tenyo production prop in which an apparently empty metal pan is covered and a dove, silks, or other objects are produced. An uncommon example of Tenyo’s traditional stage apparatus, distinct from the company’s familiar T-series close-up magic.
Crystal Pyramid. T-165, 1994

Designed by Tomoyuki Shimomura, a borrowed coin placed outside a crystal pyramid mysteriously appears inside a closed box at its center. A particularly visual example of Tenyo’s ingenious mechanical magic of the 1990s.
Angel’s Coins. T-2, ca. 1960s.

One of the earliest entries in Tenyo’s T-series, allowing coins to mysteriously travel from one hand to the other. Its T-2 designation places it at the very beginning of what would become Tenyo’s celebrated numbered series.
Illusion Truck. T-241, 2009

Designed by Takayuki Kumazawa, a miniature lion vanishes and reappears inside an apparently empty toy truck. The whimsical prop conceals the kind of clever mechanical construction for which Tenyo became known.
