Chinese Chopper. Abbott’s Magic, Colon, Michigan, ca. 1960s.
A classic stage apparatus designed and manufactured by Abbott’s Magic, based on an effect invented by Lester Lake. A spectator places their head through the central opening as a large blade is lowered, apparently passing harmlessly through their neck while severing objects positioned on either side.
Constructed with a bold red, black, and gold stenciled finish, featuring an expressive face at its center and decorative details throughout. The effect was described in John Northern Hilliard’s Greater Magic (1938), establishing its place among the classic stage illusions of the twentieth century. Measures approximately 47¾″ tall × 27″ wide. Disassembles for transport and storage.
