Fesselzange No. 5 (“Hamburg 8”)

$225.00

Fesselzange No. 5 (“Hamburg 8”) Handcuffs. Germany, early 20th century.

Nickel-plated double-cuff mechanical restraint folding into a compact form and opening to two opposing cuffs. Commonly known as “Hamburg 8” handcuffs, these were originally produced as German police restraints. This example features an added non-factory notch modification to the lock case, converting the cuffs for rapid escape use. Similar modified examples were later marketed within magic as “Spirit Handcuffs,” allowing near-instant release when worn in the proper orientation while remaining deceptive to an uninformed participant. Retains original printed box labeled Fesselzange No. 5, noting keyless locking. Surface wear and oxidation consistent with age and use; box worn with edge losses. Special thanks to Joe Fox for generously sharing his knowledge and expertise.
